FOIA is your right to request everything the government has in your immigration file (A-File): forms, decisions, notes. Free in most cases. Attorneys use it to know exactly where a case stands.

How to file a FOIA request today

Since January 22, 2026, USCIS requires all requests to be filed online. Here are the 4 steps:

  1. Create an account on FIRSTGo to first.uscis.gov, the USCIS online FOIA system, and create a free account.
  2. Fill out the requestFull name, date of birth, country of birth, and your A-Number if you have one. The more detail you give, the easier the file is to find.
  3. Sign the consentIf you are requesting your own file, you sign online. If you are requesting for someone else, that person must give consent.
  4. Track the statusYou get a control number. Responses usually take a few weeks to a few months. You can track it on FIRST, and soon right here.
Test mode (sandbox). The status checker talks to the official USCIS API in their test environment. Today only test numbers return data. When production opens, you will be able to submit your FOIA request right here and track your own number.
